Nepal dengue fever update

The Epidemiology and Disease Control Division (EDCD) in Nepal reported today an update on dengue fever in the country for 2022.

As of December 11, 2022 a total of 54,232 dengue cases have been identified, with Bagmati province reporting highest number (42143) followed by Lumbini province (4984) and Province-1 (2249).

The top 10 districts have reported the highest number of cases (45,234, 84%), with sporadic cases reported from other district. Out of the top 10 districts reporting dengue cases, the highest numbers of cases are being reported from Kathmandu (14165), Lalitpur (9614), Bhaktapur (6145), Makawanpur (5830), Chitwan (3188), Dang (2405), Dhading (1678) and Rupandehi (1203).

T0 date, 67 deaths due to dengue are verified.

In Nepal, dengue is a rapidly emerging disease. Vector surveillance conducted in three districts: Dang, Lalitpur and Kathmandu has demonstrated presence of the vector Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. All 4 dengue serotypes exist in Nepal, with DENV-1 and 2 historically contributing the highest burden.

Despite decreasing northern temperatures, dengue-transmitting mosquitoes remain active. Vietnam reported 10,000 new dengue cases in the past week, totaling 335,333 this year, with 123 deaths. Cases have surged 4.9 times compared to 2021, with 98 more deaths recorded.
